How the FDA Lets us Down Once Again

Snake Oil Salesman Are Alive and Well

The recent article from Consumers Report that about 40% of Glucosamine and Chondroitin products tested are not delivering the proper ingredients reminds me that there are unscrupulous people looking to make a quick buck.

Ethical business conduct is the norm but a few cut corners and don’t deserve to be in business. Eliot Spitzer, former State Attorney for New York State knew how to take care of fraud. It’s unfortunate that the FTC in Washington does not have the budget or the incentive to put these Snake Oil salesman in jail.

I know that Glucosamine and Chondroitin help.

My wife and I take it daily and have used the Walgreen brand in recent years when another brand we had been using caused my wife to have itchy skin. The Walgreen brand passed the Consumer Union tests. My Mayo doctor confirmed that about 50% of his patients that take the GC combination are helped.

Public Citizen does not endorse the use of the product, probably because of the fact that the ingredients are deficient in too many brands.

Most vitamin and nutritional products are manufactured and sold by reputable companies who sell them to reputable retailers in the United States. I believe that the GC products have a special problem due to a scarcity of good sources of raw materials.

Recently, there has been an increased number of negative articles about various vitamin and nutritional products discrediting their use.

I was very disturbed when it was reported in a review of 19 Vitamin E studies of various degrees of rigid analysis by a professor from John Hopkins University that Vitamin E 400 IUs was detrimental to your health. My personal experience is that if I don’t take it daily I get horrible night cramps in my calf muscles.

I have read that there is a global movement afoot to reduce the Over the Counter availability of Vitamin E to 35 IUs. All other vitamins and minerals and nutrients will also have low maximum standards for over the counter sale.

The International agency behind this is Codex Alimentarius with headquarters in Rome, Italy. This commission is a joint commission sponsored by the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION and the FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS.

The FDA has representation on this International agency and is not disclosing its role nor reporting back to the American public what the FDA views and goals are.

Some of the Internet Nutritional sites believe that the Global Pharmaceutical manufacturers are pushing for these low maximum standards, so that ultimately my Vitamin 400 iu’s as well as any other nutritional ingredient over a minimal daily standard would be classified as a Therapeutic dose and would be available only on prescription.

Considering the fact that prescription products have also done great harm to many American citizens, you have to believe that there are also Snake Oil salesmen on the other side of the counter. The difference is they are more sophisticated and hide or ignore the negative aspects of clinical trials and get the FDA to approve marginal or deadly drugs. All you have to do is add up the number of Rx drugs removed by the FDA from the market place in the last ten years and you get an idea of how deadly these Snake Oil salesman can be.

Currently, the branded pharmaceutical manufacturers are loosing more and more sales to generics. Also, their ability to develop new drugs that are not “me too” high priced copycat drugs are minimal, which means that their future growth may depend on controlling the nutritional supplement industry.

One industry source has confirmed to me that this is the direction that is being taken and there is no way of stopping the development since it is being done on a global basis.

This then explains why there are so many negative articles in recent months, and this discrediting can only be stopped if the Snake Oil people on both sides of the counter are identified and prosecuted for fraud. We don’t need more laws; all we need is the will and the determination in Washington to stop these charlatans.

In the meantime, just buy the nutritional products you like and believe in from reputable retailers. This is your best chance of avoiding buying a defective or harmful nutritional or drug product.
