TV WESTERNS OF YESTERYEAR

YET ANOTHER “OLDER
THAN DIRT” TRIVIAL QUIZ

By Carolyn Kaiser

NOTE: These photos were taken at the Calgary, Alberta, Canada Stampede in 2005.

I’VE ALWAYS LOVED COWBOYS!

Journey down memory lane and see how many of these rough and tough guys you can remember.

BONANZA

Besides Gunsmoke, Bonanza was the most successful Western TV series. It ran 14 years and ranked in the top ten shows for each season for nine consecutive years — three of them spent at the number one spot.  Bonanza has seen two revivals: one a pilot for a prospective new syndicated series, and the other a television movie on NBC.

1. Which actor left Bonanza after six years?

A. Pernell Roberts

B. Michael Landon

C. Lorne Greene

2. How many times was Ben Cartwright married?

A. Once

B. Never

C. Three times

3. Who did not guest star on Bonanza?

A. Telly Savalas

B. Jodie Foster

C. William Shatner

GUNSMOKE

Premiering on CBS in September 1955 and completing its network run September 1975, Gunsmoke is the longest running dramatic series in the history of television.

Gunsmoke started a longtime trend for TV westerns. At one point there were 30 of them on the air at the same time. But Gunsmoke outlasted the others and at the time of its cancellation in 1975, it was the only show of its kind still on the air.

4. How tall was the star of Gunsmoke, James Arness?

A. 5 ft. 8 in

B. 6 ft. 7 in

C. 6 ft. 3 in

5. Which actor played the role of Chester Goode, Marshal Matt Dillon's deputy?

A. Dennis Weaver

B. Ken Curtis

C. Milburn Stone

6. What was the name of the Saloon "Miss Kitty" Russell operated in Dodge City?

A. Bar None Saloon

B. Long Branch Saloon

C. Last Chance Saloon

WAGON TRAIN

The first treks were led by gruff, but good-at-heart Major Seth Adams, backed up by his competent frontier scout, Flint McCullough. After Adams and McCullough, the wagon train was led by the avuncular Christopher Hale along with new scouts Duke Shannon and Cooper Smith.

Many stories featured the trustworthy assistant wagonmaster Bill Hawks, grizzled old cook Charlie Wooster and a young orphan, Barnaby West. In a field awash with Westerns, Wagon Train established a unique style reminiscent of the anthology drama, but indelibly entrenched in Western traditions.

7.What year was the first episode of Wagon Train aired?

A. 1957

B. 1963

C. 1950

8. Each episode revolved around characters and personalities who were traveling to California by wagon train caravan from St. Joseph, Missouri.

A. TRUE

B. FALSE

9. Who played the role of Major Seth Adams, wagonmaster, from 1957 until his death in 1960?

A. Robert Fuller

B. John McIntire

C. Ward Bond

RAWHIDE

Gil Favor (Eric Fleming) was the trail boss of the cattle drive from North Texas to Sedalia, Missouri. His ramrod was a young Clint Eastwood playing Rowdy Yates. When Fleming left the show in the last season, Rowdy became the boss.

Rawhide is often compared to Wagon Train which debuted first. The cattle drive provided the same opportunity to come across many different people and situations. Even Rawhide's whiskered cook, Wishbone (Paul Brinegar) is often confused with Wagon Train's bushy cook, Charlie Wooster (Frank McGrath).

10. "Move 'em on, head 'em up"...Were part of the chorus to the theme from Rawhide.

A. FALSE

B. TRUE

11. "Rawhide" episodes ran 60 minutes and were televised in black and white.

A. TRUE

C. They ran 30 minutes in living color.

12. Clint Eastwood, who played Rowdy Yates on Rawhide, was born in San Francisco in 1940.

13. Ronald Reagan appeared on "Death Valley Days" as it's host and also as an actor, leaving the show to run for Governor of California.

A. TRUE

B. FALSE

14. Despite it's great success, "Death Valley Days" ran in only a half-hour format.

A. TRUE

B. FALSE

15. Can you name the sponsor of Death Valley Days?

A. Rinso detergent

B. Twenty Mule Team Borax

C. Colgate Tooth Paste

MAVERICK

The Mavericks were TV's most reluctant heroes. They'd rather talk their way out of trouble. Buy the fella a drink, offer a cigar, play a few hands of cards — anything but gunplay at which they weren't especially adept.

Too often, however, they found themselves having to rescue someone, hopefully a damsel in distress. Gamblers by trade, the Mavericks travelled the West in search of good times and the easy way.

16. Who played the role of Bret Maverick, and who played the role of his brother Bart?

A. Roger Moore (Bret) and Robert Colbert (Bart.)

B. James Garner (Bret) and Jack Kelly (Bart.)

C. Leo Gardon (Bret) and Peter Breck (Bart.)

17. Remember Doc Holiday? Who played him so well?

A. Richard Long

B. Ephrim Zimbalist, Jr.

C. Peter Breck

18. Maverick was filmed in Black and White and ran 60 minutes.

A. TRUE

B. FALSE

WYATT EARP

As we all know, there was a real Wyatt Earp. The TV show followed some elements of his life, but was liberal with the details.

This Wyatt starts out in Ellsworth, Kansas. It is here that Ned Buntline gives him the oversized weapon, a .45 with an extra long barrel. Called a "Buntline special" it packs a heck of a wallop and give the Marshal the extra range to drop bad guys, of which there is a never ending supply.

By 1959, Wyatt moved again to Tombstone. Sooner or later, he'd get to Tombstone and the O.K. Corral.

19. Who played the title role of Wyatt Earp?

A. Fess Parker

B. Gene Autry

C. Hugh O'Brian

20. What was the name of the gang who faced Earp, his brothers and Doc Holiday at the O.K Corral?

A. The Clanton Gang

B. Besser's Gang

C. The Gang Who Couldn't Shoot Straight.

21. What was the outcome of the gunfight at the OK Corral?

A. Everyone who took part in this famous gunfight was killed.

B. Three of the Clanton gang were killed, while Ike and another wounded member escaped. The three Earp brothers -- Virgil, Wyatt and Morgan -- along with Doc Holliday survived.

C. No one was killed and the fight ended with everyone agreeing to quit after shooting at each other for six hours in the hot sun.
