WALKING THE WORLD'S MOST EXCEPTIONAL TRAILS by Eloise Napier. From the Atlas Mountains in Morocco to the West Highland Way in Scotland and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Montana, there are diverse walks presented here for hikers of all ages and abilities. Included in this collection of healthy and fun holidays is the Patagonia walk across the Argentina-Chile border, which traverses mountain paths and passes through pampas grass and nearby glaciers. Another singular trail on the Paths of Pindos in Greece is situated in one of Europe's finest wilderness areas, where bear and eagles dwell on the hillsides, and meadows — alive with wildflowers and butterflies — are edged by rustic villages.

Each trip featured here lasts between 7 and 14 days and is organized by a well-known travel specialist. 240 full-color illustrations. Great for armchair travelers, too. BUY IT NOW FOR $20.97 AT AMAZON. SAVE $8.98!

1,000 PLACES TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE by Patricia Schultz. This hefty volume reminds vacationers that hot tourist spots are small percentage of what's really worth seeing. A quick sampling: Venice's Cipriani Hotel; California's Monterey Peninsula; the Lewis and Clark Trail in Oregon; the Great Wall of China; Robert Louis Stevenson's home in Western Samoa; and the Alhambra in Andalusia, Spain.

Veteran travel guide writer Schultz divides the book geographically, presenting a little less than a page on each location. Each entry lists exactly where to find the spot (e.g. Moorea is located "12 miles/19 km northwest of Tahiti; 10 minutes by air, 1 hour by boat") and when to go (e.g., if you want to check out The Complete Fly Fisher Hotel in Montana, "May and Sept.-Oct. offer productive angling in a solitary setting").

This is an excellent resource for the intrepid traveler. BUY IT NOW FOR $13.26 AT AMAZON. SAVE $5.69!

THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN by Mitch Albom. In this fictional travel book, Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?"

Albom takes a big risk with the novel; such a story can easily veer into the saccharine. But, for the most part, Albom's telling remains poignant and is occasionally profound. This is a small, pure, and simple book that will find good company on a shelf next to It's A Wonderful Life.

HOW TO GO ALMOST ANYWHERE FOR ALMOST NOTHING by Maureen Hennessy. From the Introduction..."I began a quest for information on REALLY cheap travel. I researched an extraordinary amount of published material and then embarked upon many years of travel and research in the United States and abroad. I have now traveled extensively and at very little expense in Asia, North America, Europe and Africa.

In the United States, the largest port of entry cities will get the most attention, not only because three of my favorite cities fall into this category, but for the benefit of visitors from other lands. The principles outlined herein should pertain to travel almost everywhere and you will be able to apply them with just a little bit of courage and imagination.

Southeast Asia remains a favorite because of the low ground costs, and the most detailed information will cover Asian ports of call such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. BUY IT NOW FOR $9.95 AT AMAZON.
