THE BIG FIX: HOW THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY RIPS OFF AMERICAN CONSUMERS By Katherine Greider. A meticulously reported expose uncovers exactly how the drug industry boosts sales and bilks consumers in the most lucrative prescription drug market in the world.

As the pharmaceutical industry invests more and more in the development of new drugs, true breakthroughs are few and far between. Into the breach comes a panoply of product-line extensions and me-too drugs aimed at grabbing market share. The industry plows its high profits in flogging its products in every imaginable venue. Many doctors get their first information about new drugs from a salesperson.

Patents are expiring on flagship products. In order to sustain the growth Wall Street has come to expect, these companies must produce billions of dollars worth of new revenue -- fast. But can Americans continue to bankroll Operation Grow Big Pharma? Must we swallow the bad with the good?

THE GREAT BUST AHEAD: THE GREATEST DEPRESSION N AMERICAN AND UK HISTORY IS JUST SEVERAL SHORT YEARS AWAY By Dan Arnold. Here is a concise, straight to the point book laying out in stark terms the case for a coming depression of historically unprecedented magnitude. It will be much worse than the 1930s, beginning perhaps as early as 2009-2010, and last up to thirteen years.

Centered on hard fact demographics, the book may be a bit alarmist. At least my good friend Jim Van Horne, economics professor at Stanford, thinks so. But proof presented accurately accounts for the detailed trend of the economy from 1920 to today (something never before accomplished), and projects out to 2030 in detail. The book is very easy to read and understand, and requires no prior knowledge of economics. Down to earth things the average person can do to prepare for what is coming are covered. A summary of the catastrophic domestic social and international consequences is offered. BUY IT NOW FOR $8.95 AT AMAZON.

SOUL OF A CITIZEN: LIVING WITH CONVICTION IN A CYNICAL TIME To hide behind the smugness of cynicism is a kind of self-imposed death sentence, explains writer and social commentator Paul Loeb. In fact, now is the ideal time for gathering all our strengths and wisdom as spiritual beings and applying ourselves to shaping a better world, he claims.

Are we talking social activism here? Well, yes. But before you cringe from images of shrill, humorless, burned out activists, keep in mind that Loeb is talking about a new kind of activism -- an exciting, spiritual model for creating social change. We don't have to be pious or martyred saints. We can be "good enough" activists, assuming the task of helping 10 people in need rather than taking on the globe. We can remember the power of storytelling when convincing an audience, rather than angrily spewing scary facts. We can emphasize themes such as community and forgiveness rather than separatism and blame.

This is a deeply spiritual book, but make no mistake: Loeb's writing, research, and integrity are as solid as they come. -- Gail Hudson

WEALTH AND OUR COMMONWEALTH: Why America Should Tax Accumulated Fortunes By Bill Gates, Sr., and Chuck Collins with a foreword by Paul Volcker.

Gates, whose son cofounded Microsoft and became the wealthiest man on the planet, teams up with Collins, program director of the nonprofit United for a Fair Economy and Responsible Wealth, to explain why the government should continue to levy estate taxes on the fortunes of America's wealthiest citizens (which President Bush, advocating its elimination, has provocatively called the "death tax"). In reviewing the tax's history, the authors explain the Founding Fathers' concern with maintaining conditions of equitability that would enable any American with sufficient ambition and perseverance to accumulate a fortune within his lifetime without creating a new aristocracy. Truly a remarkable treatise on saving our democracy and strengthening citizenship.

FORTUNATE SON By J.H. Hatfield.

Recommended by two Suddenly Senior readers.

This new edition of the candid and controversial biography of George W. Bush offers an incisive look at Bush's questionable military history, disastrous business ventures, and the issues surrounding the 2000 presidential election.

New essays and illustrations add to this book on the deeds and misdeeds of President of George W. Bush. This is one of those books you will love if you don't like the Bush family and their politics. The prose is engaging; The plot turns razor sharp corners at high speed; The revelations are overwhelming.

BUSHWACKED! By Texas columnist Molly Ivins and Lou DuBose, shows us where George W. Bush came from (along with most of his programs), and how those programs like "Leave No Children Behind" have already crippled the Texas education system and what's likely to happen nationally.

I have always found Ivins' writing sharp, truthful, and full of mirth at the strange, sometimes silly, and often dangerous situations we find ourselves in under Bush II.

Molly tells it like it is, and does a wonderful job doing it. She's known our current president since he was pulling the same shenanigans that later brought down Enron. I can't recommend this book too highly.
