THE GIFT OF YOU: How to Tell Your Loved Ones Who You Really Are
by Dr. Bill McCord. Forward by Bernie Siegel, MD. This wise and simple book provides commonsense strategies for adults who want to better communicate with their families. As opposed to other approaches that emphasize estate planning or creating scrapbooks and photo albums to leave behind, this book stresses the importance of communicating openly in the present. Willard Scott is famous for celebrating the wit and wisdom of age. In The Older the Fiddle, the Better the Tune, he asks a wide range of people, "What's the greatest thing about getting older?" THE VIRTUES OF AGING
by Jimmy Carter. As you'd expect, "Virtues" is a small, thin book. But what a lot of wisdom and good reading is within!

I've read it twice now. Each time has been a treat.

As Carter amiably insists in The Virtues of Aging, you don't need to be a former president (or first lady) to make a difference in your life and the lives of others. He urges older Americans to take charge of their lives -- by staying active, whether it's through volunteerism or indulgence in personal recreation; by relying on oneself as much as possible; by getting involved with others; and by putting one's affairs in order with an honest self-awareness of the inevitability that even the richest, most rewarding life comes to a close.

ON TURNING 65
"This is perhaps the best book I've read on the subject," says Frank. With surprising grace and no small measure of cantankerousness, Jerome shares his patient reflections on aging. Using both his own reading and the study of the body he inhabits, he tells us what happens, physically, when you are a man -- accustomed to fairly vigorous activity coupled with the sedentary habits of a writer, facing your sixty-fifth birthday.

The year he shares with us is mostly media-free--an experiment he and his wife undertook -- and companioned by Thoreau, that wondrous, curmudgeonly fellow who died rather younger than Jerome is now.

Some of this is screamingly funny, all of it is thoughtful.

SOUL OF A CITIZEN: LIVING WITH CONVICTION IN A CYNICAL TIME
To hide behind the smugness of cynicism is a kind of self-imposed death sentence, explains writer and social commentator Paul Loeb. In fact, now is the ideal time for gathering all our strengths and wisdom as spiritual beings and applying ourselves to shaping a better world, he claims.

Are we talking social activism here? Well, yes. But before you cringe from images of shrill, humorless, burned out activists, keep in mind that Loeb is talking about a new kind of activism -- an exciting, spiritual model for creating social change. We don't have to be pious or martyred saints. We can be "good enough" activists, assuming the task of helping 10 people in need rather than taking on the globe. We can remember the power of storytelling when convincing an audience, rather than angrily spewing scary facts. We can emphasize themes such as community and forgiveness rather than separatism and blame.

This is a deeply spiritual book, but make no mistake: Loeb's writing, research, and integrity are as solid as they come. -- Gail Hudson

THE POWER OF NOW
is a guide to spiritual awakening from a man who is emerging as one of this generation's clearest, most inspiring teachers on the subject.

I've bought this book for several friends, both 65 and over. They all enjoyed reading it.

Eckhart Tolle is not aligned with any particular religion but does what all the great masters have done: shows that the way, the truth, and the light already exist within each human being. There is no need to look elsewhere.

At the heart of the book is Tolle's own story of early despair that culminated in a life-transforming experience of enlightenment at the age of 29. He emerged to share insights on the perils of the mind, the power of the present, and the accessibility of one's true nature.

According to Tolle, "To regain awareness of Being and to abide in that state of 'feeling-realization' is enlightenment."
